Achillea erba-rotta
(All.)
Simple-leaved moil
debris, cliffs, stony pastures
June - August
Subalpine, Alpine
This species is an Alpine endemic, i.e. it grows exclusively in the Alps.
This yarrow in the Asteraceae family has a corymb inflorescence bearing white ligulate flowers and yellowish tubular ones. We observe an interesting polymorphism regarding the leaves: the subspecies moschata, endemic approximately from the Pennine Alps (near the Gran San Bernardo pass) to the Eastern Alps, has more divided leaves than the subspecies erba-rotta, which is endemic to the Sout-western Alps (approximately from the Graian Alps to the south). The Aosta Valley being the intersection of the 2 zones, both subspecies can be found there, as well as many intermediate forms.
