Valeriana celtica subsp celtica is endemic to the Occidental Alps and it is quite common in the Gran Paradiso Park. It grows as a rosette of elongated and narrow leaves from which emerge the floral stem. The flowers are gathered in verticels on top of the stem, with a corolla that is yellow at the base and purple on the lobes. It is easily noticeable : in autumn, by walking in the alpine meadows, you can smell it strong odor (similar to foot odor!).
The valerian’s root, particularly odorous, is used as a clothes moth repellent. Besides, the essential oil extracted is used in perfumes and for flavoring wine.
