Saxifraga retusa subsp. augustana (Vacc.)
Aoste Valley Saxifrage
calcareous rocky environments
June - August
Nival, Alpine

This subspecies almost only grows in the calcareous areas of the Alps in the Eastern part of the Aoste Valley, in particular in the Gran Paradiso Park, where it is found up to 3150m high. Small crassulescent plant, it forms dense cushions from which emerge the inflorescences. The flowers are pink and gathered in corymbs. The name of the subspecies comes from Aoste’s former name, Augusta Praetoria.

The other subspecies, retusa, has opposite tastes in substrates, and only grows in siliceous environments. Thus, their repartitions are complementary.
