Campanula thyrsoides (L.)
Yellow Bellflower
Stony meadows
June - September
Subalpine, Alpine

This species, present throughout the Alps but with fragmented distribution, is easy to recognise due to its numerous yellow flowers (it is the only bellflower in the western Alps with flowers of this colour), gathered together to form a dense cylindrical or oval-shaped terminal spike. The whole plant is shaggy, due to strong patent hairs and has numerous linear-spatulate leaves. The genus name comes from Latin and means "small bell" in reference to the shape of the corolla. The specific epithet, from the Greek "thyrsos", refers to the shape of the inflorescence.
