Artemisia glacialis (L.)
Glacier wormwood
debris, cliffs, stony pastures
July - August
Alpine
This species is an Alpine endemic, i.e. it grows exclusively in the Alps. The glacier wormwood is specifically endemic to the Western Alps, quite common in the Parc in the valleys of Cogne and Rhêmes. Its particularity, which distinguish it from the other species of the genus artemisia (mugwort, sagebrush and other wormwoods) is the bright yellow of its flowers, as well as its thinner and more divided leaves in many lobes. Silver grey in color, densely hairy, it forms dense cushions from which emerge the flowers, all tubular and gathered in globose heads.
Unlike other Artemisia, the glacier wormwood isn’t aromatic and isn’t used in the composition of the famous genepi liquor.
