This subspecies is alpine endemic, i.e. it grows exclusively in the Alps. The subspecies valesiaca takes its name from the Swiss canton of Valais, which borders the Aosta Valley and has a distinctly arid, continental climate. It grows in high-altitude grasslands on siliceous soils and its characteristic feature is the whitish to light yellow colouring of its flowers with a pronounced purple tip.
